Corruption

Corruption – is the use by a person of his/her official powers or related opportunities to obtain an unlawful benefit for himself/herself or others, as well as the reverse process of obtaining an unlawful benefit (according to Article 1 of the of Ukraine «On Prevention of Corruption»).

Corruption is a global and interdisciplinary concept that affects all spheres of society – from devaluing education and moral principles to slowing economic development and undermining democratic processes.

There are three key elements of corruption:

  • UNIVERSALITY:
    Corruption is not limited to state institutions – it can also occur in other environments: business, media, and NGOs.
  • ABUSE OF POWER:
    A person uses the official powers granted to him/her for personal purposes, not in the interests of the state, society, organization or company.
  • OBTAINING BENEFITS:
    Specifically, a situation where a person receives private benefits without legal grounds.
